The federal government now confronted the challenge of reintegrating the Confederate states back into the nation and ensuring the full citizenship of newly freed slaves in these territories. This period, known as Reconstruction, was thus a pivotal turning point in American history. It saw three new amendments to the US constitution and radical experiments in democracy and civil rights. Yet by 1877, White northerners seemed to have given up on protecting the rights of Black people within the southern states, and federal troops were withdrawn from the South in 1877 as a compromise to settle the disputed presidential election of 1876, marking the end of Reconstruction.
