Description The Department of English at Bates College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Early Modern Literature to begin July 1, 2026. The successful candidate will teach five courses over the 2026-2027 academic year, including two introductory classes (“Foundations of English Literature” and “What is poetry?”) and intermediate level courses on Shakespeare and special topics in Early Modern Studies; this position also includes the possibility of offering a 300-level seminar in the candidate’s area of expertise. Applications from candidates working anywhere between 1500-1800 are welcome, as is the ability to teach Transatlantic perspectives, critical expertise in gender and sexualities studies, and/or Early Modern Race Studies. Responsibilities are limited in scope and focus on teaching and mentoring students during the term of the appointment. Advising and student supervision responsibilities will be limited to thesis supervision aligned with the primary field of expertise, Early Modern Literature.
