Job Description The Van der Heijden Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech in association with the Department of Neuroscience is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant. Led by Dr. Meike van der Heijden, the lab aims to study the development of cerebellar function in health and disease. The lab goals are to understand why perturbations to the cerebellum can lead to neurodevelopmental disorders with a broad range of symptoms and phenotypes. The work is relevant to understanding the pathophysiology of childhood disorders like autism spectrum disorders and pediatric movement disorders including dystonia and ataxia. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable working in a new lab. Experience working in a research laboratory is helpful but not mandatory. The lab requires the candidate to be comfortable with interactions with mice to maintain a successful operation of the research activities. Fundamental interest in mouse genetics and behavior is a necessity. Techniques we use include in vivo electrophysiology, neuroanatomy, computation, and optogenetics.
