Job description
The Cytologist is responsible for preparing, screening, and evaluating non-gynecologic cytology specimens (e.g., body fluids, fine needle aspirations, and other non-cervical samples) to detect cellular abnormalities, infections, inflammatory processes, and malignancies. The cytologist works closely with pathologists to provide accurate and timely diagnostic information to guide patient care. Departmental Support: - Performs periodic quality assurance - Performs cytology related support functions such as accessioning and processing of specimens, staining and mounting of non-gynecological specimens. - Maintains the cytology slide file in accordance with slide retention procedures. Technical Skills and Knowledge: - Screens and evaluates non-gynecological cytology specimens and assists with policy manual, statistical analyses, and quality program. - Performs non-gynecological cytology duties effectively to the operation of a lab. - Assists specimen collection procedures, such as fine needle aspiration (FNA), making cellular preparations during the procedure, - Performs rapid staining and evaluating the cellular preparation under the microscope for cellular adequacy.
