Job description
Description Assistant Scientist – Experimental (Flying Focus Applications) The University of Rochester has exciting opportunities for early-career scientists to join the Ultrafast Plasma Photonics Group within the Plasma & Ultrafast Laser Science & Engineering (PULSE) Division at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE). Recent advancements in short-pulse laser physics—particularly the development of the flying focus—have opened new opportunities for laser–plasma applications. The ability to control the velocity of the laser focal region enables fundamentally new approaches to generating radiation probes with ultrashort-pulse lasers. This project will leverage these probes, together with novel long-wavelength, single-shot spectrometers, to diagnose plasmas under extreme conditions using joule-class laser systems. Experimental Position: The successful candidate will lead the development of flying focus–based applications, with a specific emphasis on advancing capabilities relevant to stockpile stewardship. Responsibilities: - Develop and execute experiments utilizing the flying focus for laser–plasma interaction studies - Advance radiation probe generation using ultrashort-pulse la...
