Job description
In partnership with the Hamlet of Setauket, Cornell Cooperative Extension is proud to continue with our shellfish grow-out program where oyster will be raised to enhance water quality and the natural oyster population. As an added educational component, high school and/or college students have the opportunity to partake in a paid internship. The program will allow students to learn about shellfish aquaculture techniques including grow-out procedures, measuring and growth and survival rates, and monitoring environmental parameters such as water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. The paid internship will be offered from July 1st through August 28th. The positions are part-time 12-20 hours per week. Depending on timing, this orientation may be virtual or held at the Riverhead office. Major Duties of Position: 1. Work with Cornell Shellfish Biologist and Aquaculture Assistant in Setauket, NY. 2. Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the shellfish grow-out system (FLUPSY). 3. Assist with the collection of scientific monitoring data for shellfish and water quality. 4.
