Who is Saint Louis University? Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. SLU, which also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, is recognized for world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and a strong commitment to faith and service. We proudly celebrate 100 years since the founding of the department in 1924 by Dr. Edward A. Doisy, recipient of the 1943 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the synthesis of vitamin K. The tradition of excellence started by Dr. Doisy continued with the remarkable scientific achievements of his successors, Dr. Robert Olson and Dr. William Sly. Today, faculty in BMB honor this tradition with work at the forefront of disciplines like blood coagulation, DNA repair, and lipid metabolism, supported by state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation.
