The laboratory investigates the role of B cells and antibodies in the pathogenesis of human demyelinating diseases multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica. Research is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, DOD, biotech and philanthropic organizations. Current projects involve mechanisms of antibody-mediated demyelination, identification and prevalence of disease-relevant antigens, bioassays for antigen detection in patient specimens, animal models of antibody-mediated CNS demyelination, mechanisms of complement pathway inhibition, and relationships between Epstein-Barr virus infection and patient B cell immunity in MS.
